To evaluate the effectiveness of adjuvant radiotherapy in reducing local recurrence following initial excision of a primary DM where the excision margin was considered inadequate or there were other features that would increase local recurrence

Number of Patients:

24

- 24 patients with a histological diagnosis of DM who had received surgical excision as initial treatment followed by postoperative radiotherapy were identified from the Princess Alexandra Hospital Melanoma Clinic.

- There were 18 men and 6 women with a mean age at diagnosis of 69.1 years (range 21–85 years).

- The head and neck was the site of the primary lesion in 22 patients (88%).
Reported outcome(s):

Primary outcome: 3 year in-field relapse free survival
3 year relapse free survival
3 year overall survival (OS)

Results of outcome(s):

With a mean follow up of 36 months (range 4–96 months):
- 3 year in-field relapse-free survival: 91% (95% CI, 68.1–97.6%)
- 3 year relapse-free survival was 86% (95% CI, 63.2–95.4%)
- 3 year OS of 83% (95% CI, 54.9–94.3%)
